Cheering for Belize at Rio 2016!

Cheering for Belize at Rio 2016!

It’s that time again! Athletes from all over the world are suited up and ready to compete at the highest level in Rio this summer, and we’ll be cheering them on from Placencia!

Belize has three athletes on the team this year: Brandon Jones and Katy Sealy are competing in Track & Field, and Renick James is our champion in judo. We can’t wait to see how they do!

The San Pedro Sun has a great interview with Katy on her Belizean roots. And Renick James says they’re expecting to “put Belize on the map” this year!

It looks like our flag-bearer, Brandon Jones, has already begun. His dance moves at the Opening Ceremony already made waves across the internet!

Belize has sent a team to every Summer Olympic Games since 1968, but it’s not only the Belizean team we’ll be cheering for! Obviously there are expats from all over the world living in Placencia, so they’ll be a lot of good-natured competition taking place around town over the next two weeks.

One of the most-watched athletes will be Simone Biles, one of the elite champions on the US Women’s Gymnastics Team, who has been called “the best athlete in America today.”

Her mother is from Belize, and she visited the homeland just last summer for her brother’s wedding, so you can be sure that everyone will be cheering extremely loudly every time she graces our screens! She is, after all, the world’s best gymnast!

Good luck to all the athletes competing in Rio this year! We’ll be watching!
